Moragahakanda

Moragahakanda Reservoir, officially named the Kulasinghe Reservoir, is a monumental feat in Sri Lanka’s water management and energy sectors. Located in Elahera, within the Matale District of the Central Province, this reservoir is the largest in the country and a central component of the Moragahakanda–Kalu Ganga Project.

  • Height: 65 meters

  • Reservoir Capacity: 521 million cubic meters

  • Surface Elevation: 185 meters

  • Primary Purposes: Irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, potable water supply, and inland fisheries

  • Operational Since: 2018

  • Historical Note: The original reservoir was first constructed by King Wasaba in 111 AD.

  • Best Time to Visit: Dry season (April–September) for clearer skies and safer travel conditions.

  • Access Routes: Reachable via the Elahera–Naula road; approximately 2 km from the ancient Elahera anicut.

  • Preparation:

    • Wear comfortable footwear for the moderate hike to the viewing point.

    • Carry sufficient water and sun protection.

    • Obtain necessary permissions from local authorities or security posts if planning to explore restricted areas.
