Sera Ella is a captivating twin-drop waterfall located in Pothatawela village, near Laggala in Sri Lanka’s Matale District. Nestled within the Knuckles Mountain Range, this natural wonder is renowned for its serene ambiance and unique geological features.
Twin Cascades: Sera Ella comprises two parallel streams that gracefully descend from a height of approximately 10 meters (33 feet) over a rugged rock face.
Year-Round Flow: Fed by the Kitul Canal and Hunumadala River, which merge to form the Puwakpitiya River, the waterfall maintains a steady flow throughout the year.
Cave Behind the Falls: A distinctive feature of Sera Ella is the cave situated behind the waterfall. Accessible via stone steps, visitors can safely enter this cave even when the waterfall is at full flow, offering a unique perspective of the cascading water.
Proximity: Approximately 62.6 km from Matale, near the town of Laggala.
Access Route: The waterfall is situated near Illukkumbura, along the route to Bambarakiri Ella. A short walk from the main road leads to the falls, making it easily accessible for visitors.
Natural Pool: At the base of the waterfall lies a shallow pool suitable for wading. However, swimming is not recommended due to slippery rocks and potential underwater hazards.
Flora & Fauna: The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, offering opportunities for bird watching and exploration of native plant life.
Photography: The picturesque setting, with lush greenery and cascading waters, makes it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts.
The waterfall is at its most spectacular during the monsoon season, from November to March, when the water flow is at its peak.
